Zhengzhou is the beating heart of central China — a city that has stood at the crossroads of the nation for over 3,600 years. It was the capital of the Shang Dynasty, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in China, and today it is the country's busiest rail hub, where the Beijing–Guangzhou and Lanzhou–Lianyungang high-speed lines cross. Beneath the modern towers of the Zhengdong New Area lie the ruins of an ancient capital; beyond the city limits rise the Shaolin Temple — birthplace of kung fu — and the Longmen Grottoes, one of China's greatest UNESCO treasures. Zhengzhou is not a city you visit for postcard views. It is a city you pass through and suddenly realize you should have stayed longer.

Spring (Mar–May)
The classic season — 15–25°C, peach blossoms along the Yellow River, and the Peony Festival in nearby Luoyang in April. Expect some rain in early spring.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot and humid at 30–38°C. Go early for outdoor sites, stay indoors in air-conditioned museums at midday. Summer evenings are lively around Erqi Square.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
The best season — crisp air, golden skies over the Yellow River, and clear views of Songshan. October's National Day week is crowded; book ahead.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cold but rarely freezing — perfect for museums, hotpot and the dramatic winter light of Shaolin Temple. Prices are at their lowest and crowds thin out.

Central Plains Triangle
Day 1: Zhengzhou city. Day 2: Shaolin and Dengfeng. Day 3: 40-minute train to Luoyang for the Longmen Grottoes and the White Horse Temple, or 30 minutes to Kaifeng for the Song Dynasty old town. Evening high-speed return to Zhengzhou or onward.

Alipay and WeChat Pay are universal; carry a little cash for small noodle stalls. Taxis and DiDi are cheap — the city center to East Station is about ¥30.
