Dujiangyan is home to one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history — an irrigation system built in 256 BC that still channels the Min River into the Chengdu Plain today, 2,200 years and countless floods later. Instead of damming the river, the architect Li Bing split it with a fish-mouth levee, letting the current do the work, so the city has never needed a dam and never once failed. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it sits at the doorstep of Mount Qingcheng, the sacred birthplace of Taoism, where misty temples have climbed the green peaks for two millennia. Add the old town of Guanxian with its lantern-lit Nanqiao Bridge and a panda base where you can watch cubs play — and you have one of the most rewarding day trips in all of China, just 45 minutes from Chengdu.

Old Town Guanxian (灌县古城)
The atmospheric heart of Dujiangyan — stay inside the old walls, steps from Nanqiao Bridge, the night market and the west gate of the irrigation site. Guesthouses and one heritage hotel; the lantern-lit streets make it the most romantic base.
Best for First-TimersMount Qingcheng Foot (青城山门)
At the front mountain entrance — Taoist-style hotels and teahouses in the bamboo shade, a 5-minute walk to the cable car. Waking up here means beating the day-trip crowds onto the mountain.

Modern district near the high-speed station with the newest hotels, malls and hotpot restaurants. Ten minutes by taxi or bus to the old town.

Built in 256 BC by engineer Li Bing, this UNESCO World Heritage Site still irrigates the Chengdu Plain with zero dams. Walk the full route: the Fish Mouth levee that splits the Min River, the Flying Sand Weir that sheds floods, and the Bottleneck Gate carved through solid rock. Finish at the Erwang Temple shrine above the river.
The birthplace of Taoism — a UNESCO-listed sacred peak where temples have nestled in the mist for 2,000 years. The front mountain is a chain of Taoist halls reached by cable car and stone stairs; the wilder back mountain is waterfalls and bamboo forest. Allow a full day.
A preserved Ming-era river town at the irrigation site's west gate. The arched Nanqiao Bridge spans the roaring Min River with painted eaves and lanterns — best at dusk, when the light show turns the water golden. Night markets serve Sichuan street food until late.
This branch of the Chengdu Research Base hosts giant pandas in a forest setting — fewer crowds than the main base, with cubs usually visible in the morning. The red panda enclosure is a bonus. Book the morning slot online.
For nature: Longchi National Forest Park offers highland lakes and summer cool, while Hongkou Valley is famous for whitewater rafting in July–August. Both are 30–60 minutes from town.
The forested hill above the old town — climb the ancient steps for the classic panoramic view of the river splitting at the Fish Mouth. The Anlan Suspension Bridge crosses the river below.
Best Time to Visit
Each season offers something different.
Spring (Mar–May)
Mild 15–25°C with the Min River at its most photogenic — snowmelt from the western mountains. Qingming Festival (early April) brings the traditional water-releasing ceremony at the Fish Mouth.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
The classic season — the river is full and dramatic, the mountains 8–10°C cooler than Chengdu, and Hongkou rafting is in full swing. Expect rain showers and crowds on weekends.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Clear skies, golden light on the old town's tiled roofs, and Qingcheng's maples turning red. The best season for photography and hiking.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cool and quiet at 5–10°C. The irrigation site is peaceful, Qingcheng's front mountain gets occasional snow on the peaks, and hotpot after a cold day hits differently.

Engineering & Old Town
Morning at the irrigation site (Fish Mouth → Flying Sand Weir → Bottleneck Gate → Erwang Temple), lunch of Sichuan hotpot in the old town, afternoon at Yulei Mountain lookout and Anlan Bridge, then Nanqiao Bridge at dusk with the river light show.
Water & Taoist Peak
Day 1: irrigation site + old town (overnight in Guanxian). Day 2: early cable car up Mount Qingcheng's front mountain — Jianfu Palace, Tianshi Cave, Shangqing Palace — down the eastern stairway, and hot tea at the mountain foot before returning to Chengdu.
Pandas & Wild Back Mountain
Day 1: Panda Valley in the morning (feeding time), irrigation site in the afternoon. Day 2: Qingcheng front mountain. Day 3: the wild back mountain — waterfalls, bamboo paths and the Taian ancient town, or Hongkou rafting if it's summer. Return to Chengdu by high-speed rail (40 min).

Old-town favorites: yangrou chuan (lamb skewers) on the night market, Sichuan-style rabbit, and "Guanxian lao laro" cured meat — a local specialty. Finish with a bowl of sweet jelly by Nanqiao Bridge.
High-speed rail from Chengdu Xipu station reaches Dujiangyan in about 40 minutes (trains every 20–30 min). The direct line continues to Qingchengshan station for the mountain. DiDi from Chengdu is ~¥100.
Enter the irrigation site before 9am and walk Fish Mouth → Bottleneck first; tour groups flood in by 10. Mount Qingcheng's cable car queue peaks at 10–11am — go early or take the hiking path.
Irrigation site ¥80, Qingcheng front mountain ¥80, panda valley ~¥55 — all bookable on official WeChat accounts with passport/ID. The old town itself is free.
Alipay and WeChat Pay everywhere; English is limited outside the tourist sites. Keep "都江堰", "青城山" and "南桥" in your phone for taxis.
