Overview & History

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Shenzhen Bay, Splendid China Folk Village (锦绣中华民俗村) is a captivating cultural theme park that brings the vastness of China into a single day. Part of the larger Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) complex, this unique destination combines two adjacent parks: Splendid China and the China Folk Culture Village. Opened in the late 1980s, Splendid China was the first of its kind in China—a miniature wonderland featuring nearly 100 scaled-down replicas of the country's most iconic landmarks, arranged precisely according to their geographical positions on a map. With over 50,000 tiny ceramic figurines populating the scenes, visitors can literally walk from the Great Wall to the Li River in minutes. The adjacent Folk Village, added later, celebrates the architectural styles and living traditions of China's 56 ethnic groups, offering immersive cultural experiences. Together, they provide a comprehensive journey through China's 5,000 years of history, geography, and diverse cultures—all within a single day.

Highlights & Activities

The park offers a rich tapestry of sights and experiences. In Splendid China, marvel at miniature versions of the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors, the Potala Palace, and the Huangshan Mountains, each crafted with astonishing detail. The layout forms a giant map of China, allowing you to "travel" from north to south. In the Folk Village, explore life-size replicas of ethnic villages—from Dai bamboo houses to Mongolian yurts—and watch free daily performances showcasing traditional dances, music, and costumes. Don't miss the spectacular afternoon show "Oriental Silks and Satins" at the Central Theater, and the evening extravaganza "Dragon and Phoenix Dance China" at the Phoenix Theater. During July and August, the Folk Village hosts a lively Water Splashing Festival, where you can join in the fun—just bring a change of clothes (water guns and raincoats are available for purchase). Pick up a promotional leaflet at the entrance to plan your route efficiently, with recommended tours like the "Joyful and Passionate China Tour" or "Family China Tour."

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Shenzhen has a subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. The best time to visit Splendid China Folk Village is from October to December and March to April, when temperatures are comfortable (15–25°C or 59–77°F) and rainfall is low. Summer (June to August) can be scorching and rainy, but it's also the time for the Water Splashing Festival—just be prepared for heat and sudden showers. Winter (January to February) is cool and dry, with fewer crowds, making it a pleasant time for a relaxed visit. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends, and arriving early (around 9:00–10:00 AM) helps you beat the peak crowds.
