Nestled in the heart of Hangzhou, Xixi National Wetland Park is a rare urban secondary wetland that spans both Xihu and Yuhang districts. It holds the distinction of being China's first and only national wetland park to integrate urban, agricultural, and cultural wetlands into a single, harmonious landscape. Covering approximately 11.5 square kilometers of protected area—down from its historical expanse of 60 square kilometers—the park is a living tapestry of waterways. About 70% of its terrain consists of rivers, ponds, lakes, and marshes, with six major rivers crisscrossing and intersecting to create a network of tributaries and fish-scale-like ponds that define Xixi's unique character.

Since ancient times, this has been a place of seclusion, where literati built private retreats like Qiuxue Nunnery, Bo’an Hut, Meizhu Mountain Villa, and Xixi Thatched Cottage. The park's ten iconic scenes—including "Autumn Reed Flying Snow," "Fishing Village Misty Rain," and "Winding Water Seeking Plum Blossoms"—capture its timeless charm. The three causeways—Fu Causeway, Green Causeway, and Longevity Causeway—invite visitors to wander through this watery wonderland, while the park also serves as a bird paradise, with multiple bird-watching pavilions for photography enthusiasts.

Xixi Wetland's location makes it a gateway to other Hangzhou treasures. Just a short distance away is Zhejiang University's Zijingang Campus, an excellent choice for families visiting the university. The campus is not far from Xixi and offers a modern academic atmosphere. Alternatively, the Zhijiang Campus, perched on a hill by the Qiantang River next to Liuhe Pagoda, features Republican-era architecture and is perfect for autumn photography. Alternatively, the area around Zhoujia Village has small restaurants specializing in Hangzhou cuisine, such as Dongpo pork and West Lake vinegar fish. For more variety, the bustling streets of Wen'er West Road and Tianmushan Road are lined with restaurants and cafes, from casual noodle shops to upscale dining.

The best time to visit Xixi Wetland is from March to May and September to November, when temperatures are pleasant and the scenery is at its peak—spring for plum blossoms and autumn for reed catkins. Summer can be hot and humid, with occasional typhoons, while winter is cold but less crowded, offering a serene, misty atmosphere. Weekends and holidays see larger crowds; visiting on a weekday morning ensures a more peaceful experience. The park opens from 8:30 to 17:00 (last ticket sale at 16:00), so plan for at least three hours to explore.
